On 30.09.1965, the Indonesian army and its militias, backed by West Germany and the United States, used a failed coup as a pretext to murder up to three million suspected communists. This documentary uses the West German government’s own files to expose Bonn’s role in the genocide.

The files show that Bonn knew of the massacres from the first week. Its ambassador called the slaughter “a cleansing entirely in our interest” and called the killers “our friends in the army”. West Germany spread the army’s propaganda, held out money to the army’s side and cleared weapons for it, to keep Inadonesia out of communist hands and away from recognising the GDR. Six of the first seven West German ambassadors in Jakarta had been Nazi party members or Nazi propagandists. To this day, Berlin rejects what it calls “the hypothesis of support”.
